Yala National Park travel guide

The highest density of leopards anywhere in the world.

About Yala National Park

Yala National Park

Yala covers nearly 1,000 square kilometres of scrub jungle, lagoons and granite outcrops where the dry zone meets the Indian Ocean. It is best known for one animal: the Sri Lankan leopard, an island subspecies found nowhere else, and here at a density unmatched anywhere on the planet.

A safari is not only about the cats. Elephants cross the tracks in family groups, sloth bears forage for palu fruit in June and July, crocodiles line the waterholes and the birdlist runs past 200 species — painted storks, peacocks by the hundred, and bee-eaters flashing across the road in front of the jeep.

Highlights & attractions

What you should not miss

The five things our guides make sure every guest sees in Yala National Park.

Leopard tracking

Block 1 holds the highest concentration; morning drives give you the best odds.

Elephant herds

Around 300 elephants roam the park and gather near the tanks in dry months.

Sloth bears

Most visible in June and July when the palu trees fruit.

Patanangala Beach

A dramatic granite outcrop where the jungle runs straight into the ocean.

Birdlife

Over 200 species including six endemics — a serious birding destination in its own right.

Things to do

How to spend your time in Yala National Park

  • Take the 5.30am gate opening — leopards are most active in the first two hours of light.
  • Book a private jeep rather than a shared one so your driver can wait when a sighting develops.
  • Combine Yala with Bundala National Park for flamingos and wetland birds.
  • Stay at a tented camp on the park boundary and fall asleep to the sound of the jungle.
  • Visit Kataragama, a pilgrimage town sacred to Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alike.
  • Ask your guide about the park’s block system — Block 1 is busiest, Block 5 far quieter.

Best time to visit

February to July, when water is scarce and animals concentrate around the waterholes.

The park is at its best from February to July: low water levels push wildlife into the open and leopard sightings peak. Yala’s Block 1 usually closes for around six weeks from early September for restoration — we simply move safaris to Block 5 or to Udawalawe when it does. October to January is greener, wetter and quieter.
