Most people planning a Sri Lanka holiday hit the same wall: one website says December, another says July, and both are right. The island has two separate monsoons hitting opposite coasts at opposite times of year, so the useful question is not "when should I visit Sri Lanka" but "where should I be in the month I can travel".
The two monsoons, briefly
The Yala monsoon runs from May to September and soaks the southwest — Colombo, Galle, Mirissa and the western hill country. The Maha monsoon runs from October to January and hits the north and east — Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna. The Cultural Triangle in the centre sits in the dry zone and is comfortable almost all year.
December to March — peak season
The south and west coasts are at their best: calm seas, sunshine and prime blue whale season off Mirissa. The Cultural Triangle is dry and the hill country is at its clearest, so this is the ideal window for a classic round tour. It is also the busiest and most expensive period, so book hotels three to six months ahead.
April — the shoulder sweet spot
Arguably the best single month. Both coasts are between monsoons, the hill country is warm and clear, and the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April fills the country with celebration. Expect heat in the lowlands and book around the New Year holiday itself.
May to September — go east
The southwest gets warm, heavy rain, usually in short afternoon bursts rather than all-day drizzle. Meanwhile Arugam Bay, Pasikuda and Trincomalee are dry, sunny and offshore — and Yala is in its best leopard-spotting months as waterholes shrink. Prices across the island drop noticeably.
October and November — the quiet inter-monsoon
The wettest stretch nationally, with thunderstorms most afternoons. It is also the greenest, cheapest and emptiest time to travel, and the sites you have seen in photographs are genuinely uncrowded. Bring a light rain jacket and plan sightseeing for mornings.
The short answer
For a first visit covering the whole island, aim for January to March or April. If you are tied to the European summer holidays, come anyway — we will simply route you east and inland, and you will have Sri Lanka largely to yourself.
