About Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa

Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka for 1,300 years, and at its height it was one of the largest cities in the world — sustained by a network of reservoirs so well engineered that several are still in use today.

Polonnaruwa, two hours east, took over in the eleventh century and is more compact and more legible: a walled royal city you can cycle around in a morning, ending at Gal Vihara, where four colossal Buddhas were cut from a single granite wall.

Highlights & attractions

What you should not miss

The five things our guides make sure every guest sees in Anuradhapura.

Ruwanwelisaya

A gleaming white stupa from 140 BC, still circled by pilgrims in white each evening.

Sri Maha Bodhi

Grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat beneath — the oldest documented tree on earth.

Jetavanaramaya

Once the third-tallest structure in the ancient world, built of 93 million bricks.

Gal Vihara, Polonnaruwa

Four Buddhas carved from one granite face, the finest sculpture in Sri Lanka.

Ancient reservoirs

The tanks of Tissa Wewa and Parakrama Samudra, engineering two millennia ahead of their time.

Things to do

How to spend your time in Anuradhapura

  • Cycle the ruins of Polonnaruwa in the early morning before the heat builds.
  • Join the evening puja at Ruwanwelisaya, when thousands of oil lamps are lit.
  • Take a guide — without context the sites are stones; with one they are a civilisation.
  • Add an afternoon safari at Minneriya to see the elephant gathering.
  • Climb Mihintale’s 1,840 steps, where Buddhism first arrived in Sri Lanka.
  • Dress in white or modest clothing for the sacred precincts.

Best time to visit

May to September is driest; visit sites at dawn or late afternoon year round.

The north central dry zone is hot — 32°C is normal — and the main rain arrives with the northeast monsoon from October to January. Whenever you come, do the sightseeing early and rest through the middle of the day. Poya (full moon) days bring huge, atmospheric crowds of pilgrims.
